About
The Artist Neville Eldred Smith
My career as an educator started at Wakefield Technical & Art College and Batley School of Art & Design. I moved to Nottingham Trent University and became the Course Leader for Foundation Studies before eventually teaching on the Photography Degree Course. I have exhibited widely in the UK and Europe with work in many public and private collections. These include The Arts Council of Great Britain and numerous Universities.
Artist Statement - 'theotherspace'
Having travelled extensively a great deal of my work is based on many historical sites that I have visited.
The mixed media drawings have a concern with depicting structure, space and time from these locations. These fragmented spaces through the de-constructed drawing process are obscured, dissolved and returned, erased and overlaid creating images that seem unstable and uncertain. In much of the work there is an indeterminacy, a liminal state in which something is not clearly defined or perhaps impossible to define.
A great deal of the work is developed through the exploration of ‘layered’ drawings where I would draw on a water colour sheet of paper and then on a layer of grafix film (on both sides of the film) that is overlaid on the water colour paper. Constantly shifting from each layer and surface until the work is finally resolved.
